History and landscape

Before being conquered by the Roman Empire, the Marche was occupied by diverse peoples: the Senonians lived in the North, the Picentes in the South, the Umbrians in the Southwest, and the Greeks in the region of Ancona
During the medieval period, the Lombards occupied the southern regions, while the Byzantines held the North
In the late medieval period, the Frankish nobility consolidated its control over the area, who then entrusted its overall governance to the Pope
During the Renaissance, the Marche (and in particular the city of Urbino) became a center for the arts, thanks to the major noble families in the region: the Malatesta, the Montefeltro, and the Della Rovere
Arount the middle of the 15th century, there was a major push to politically unify the Marche, and to diminish the role of the Church. The movement was led by two of the dominant noble families at the time: the Sforza, followed by the Borgia. However, despite their efforts (both on political and military fronts), this initiative for independence was a failure
After the extinction of the Della Rovere family (1631) the Marche was consolidated as a Papal State, and remained firmly under the control of the Vatican. Except for a brief period of French occupation (during the Napoleonic wars), the Church continued to exercise its power in the Marche, which did not end until the unification of Italy as a kingdom.
